It most definitely hurts. But it also depends on your relationship dynamic and why you guys aren't together if you love each other. Unless this is a stalker love??? 
Do they know you are in love with them? Are they an ex? 
If it's an ex, then sometimes it better to let them go and be happy if you guys broke up. If it's someone you love from afar and they have no clue that you loved them, then you should've spoken up, or maybe tried to give them a heads up about how you feel. Maybe they could've reciprocated the feelings. 
Now, if you're a stalker...well...I got nothing. 😅

girly i know the feeling. just fake it till you make it. i was deadly in love with this one boy and i saw him everyday. he left me for another  girl who i also saw everyday. i never knew her. just of her. and i acted unbothered. ignored them both. then he left her and she came to me and now she’s my best friend.
