Does it make sense to choose your beliefs based on what makes you feel best?

Background:

Most of my family is Catholic. My mom left her faith sometime between high school and adulthood. She raised me without religion but I heard it from my extended family when i was around them. Because my main influence was her and public school I followed a secular way of life until my early 20s. Many things in my life happened and I did a lot of reading on different religions and would now consider myself a Christian, but not Catholic.

When I look back at the talks my mother had with me on religion saying that when you grow up you just pick whatever feels good to you and whatever you believe in at the time, it doesn't make sense.

To me you would want to be part of a religion that is actually true, not just what makes you feel good.

People seem to do this all the time nowadays. They say well I don't agree with xyz in the Bible so I choose not to believe it, or I choose to not teach it to my kids.

What I don't understand is that if it's true then it doesn't matter whether you like it or not.

It's true and at some point you will have your judgment day and if you chose not to believe because you didn't believe in xyz then you spend eternity in hell.

Why would anyone base their decision on how they feel and not on what is right and what is true?

And when there is so much historical evidence for the Bible why do you so many people want to suppress it?
