Will I know when I’m in early labor?

I haven’t felt as much as Braxton Hicks and I’m 39 weeks. This morning I’m having some pain similar to period cramps and I also feel the pain in my left side and back a bit. 
I can’t tell if it’s constant pain or coming and going quite yet. I really don’t know what to expect for labor and contractions as a FTM. Any advice?

Early labor can be all over the place but you would know once it starts to regulate. Make sure you have all your stuff ready. People always give advice like walk, have sex, squat…etc but after 3 kids, my advice is try to rest and get as much sleep as you can. All those things won’t help much unless your body is heading there already and if it’s not, they only end up making you frustrated and worn out (been there, done that). If you are unsure if they are active contractions or just prodromal labor, I was told to take Tylenol and get in a warm bath. If they don’t ease up, then it’s real labor. Once the contractions get closer together and continue to be regular or your water breaks, you’ll need to go to the hospital.

Being in labor can take a very long time. Even if you think you might be in early labor and having light contractions, my advice would be to get some sleep! I started feeling contractions on my sons due date and was so anxious I couldn't sleep. I felt uncomfortable and just wanted to monitor how the contractions progressed. But my son wasn't born until 53 hours after I felt my first bitty contractions. Lol. Try to rest. It'll be worth it.

I wouldn’t be worried about those symptoms. If it is labor starting you’ll have contraction that you’ll 100% be able to track and they’ll continue to get more and more intense
