Crib, toddler bed, or floor bed? HELP! 20 months

Question

My son has been in a playard for 20 months and now he’s getting a bit big. Should I transition to a crib? We bought a floor bed but I don’t think he is going to grasp the concept yet. But my pediatrician says he will just eventually climb out of a crib. 
I feel sad we didn’t buy a full size crib in the first place but when he was born we didn’t have space. 
He’s an active curious boy, so I wouldn’t put it past him to try to escape but I just don’t know if he’s ready for a big kid bed yet. 
Anyone help?

My daughter did mattress on the floor and I’ll be doing that with my son. Crib never worked for us.

Do what feels right. My daughter is 28 months old and stil sleeps in a crib. She could easily crawl out if she tried, she just hasn't tried 😂

I’ve been reading about floor beds and love it. It’ll take a few days/ weeks for them to get in the routine but the idea is to let them figure out that this is the time for sleep. Giving them that autonomy gives them independence and helps them come to the right decisions. Make sure everything is safe for them like the dresser is anchored to the wall and nothing will fall over if they mess with it and shut the door. They will eventually get it.

I would try the floor bed first since you already bought vs. purchasing a crib. And not all kids will try to climb out of the crib. You could also put a baby gate on the door if you are worried about him getting out while you are asleep.

How close is he to 35 inches, most cribs max out at 35 inches so then it wouldn't really be worth it to get a full sized crib. You could definitely use the floor bed, just baby proof the room

If hes a big curious explorer then personally i wouldnt do a floor bed. Hes gonna just break out and start playing n itll be so hard to put him back down. I did switch my daughter to a toddler bed right before two but she hated being in her crib and wasnt a big explorer at that age so she liked staying in her bed. I think its all based on what yoh think ur kid can handle. Is he capable of being in his room without climbing out of bed to go play all night or is he a knock out sleeper n will stay till morning
