How should I handle a controlling grandparent?
Some background information: My mom has always been controlling with me and my siblings, and frankly not too nice to us. She's always made fun of our individuality like the way we dress or do our hair or act in public. She's been the biggest bully in my life and dragged my confidence through the mud. At the same time though, she's always told me she wished she was as pretty as me, so I've felt conflicted about my appearance my whole life. I started having serious social anxiety issues on school because of this, starting in the 4th grade. I progressively struggled more and more with my confidence and in my young teen years went through some traumas that ultimately resulted in me being completely incapable of showing up to school bc of my social anxiety combined with my ptsd. So when I turned 18 I dropped out after years of being in and out of school and got my GED. But I met my current boyfriend in 2019 at school the last time I tried to go. We've been together since and he's the father of my child now. The problem is that we met when we were both struggling with a lot of emotional baggage and were both making bad choices to cope, and we fought a lot towards the end of our first year together. In fact I ended up breaking up with him last year in October. It ended up turning into just a break though because 2 weeks after the breakup is when we found out I was pregnant. We were immediately on the same page about keeping the baby. Unfortunately things got a little rough those first couple months I was pregnant and we started fighting a lot again. My mom at that point took the initiative and contacted his mom about what was going on. She told his mom about our fights and a few other things, and our families became at odds for MONTHS. I even got accused of the baby not being my boyfriends. I was stuck playing monkey in the middle trying to bring peace back into the situation. It took a while, but things got a lot better in January and Ive actually bonded with his family so much. They accepted me and I became part of their family and me and my boyfriend learned how to communicate and work together for the sake of our daughter. We have an extremely healthy and amazing relationship now, and my relationship with his family is rock solid. Except my mom is still super salty about everything, and she refuses to see the good in any of it and continues to bash not only my boyfriend but his entire family despite all the support and love they've shown me. I'm 19, I had my daughter July 18th, and my mom tries to keep me and my daughter from seeing my boyfriend and his family. He's not allowed over at our house for more than a few hours at a time, never before noon, isn't allowed to stay for dinner or eat any of our food while he's here, and it's just not enough time with his daughter. So I took the initiative and made the choice to bring my daughter to his place and stay the night there to give him the time he deserves with me and his daughter because he works and provides me with money to buy myself and our daughter things we need and he graduated this year and is planning on joining the military beginning of next year so I want him to get as much time with us before he has to go to basic training. My mom guilt trips me though and threatens to kick me out or makes me feel stupid for the choices I make for my family and I just can't put up with it anymore. She says I'm not allowed to marry my boyfriend or "run off" with her grandbaby but I have to find a way to be independent with my family. She doesn't want to "share" my daughter with his family either and gets extremely jealous when I talk about his family and spending time with them. I don't know how to handle it and I'm covered under my parents insurance as long as Im living with them so if she decides to kick me out the burden falls on my boyfriend fresh out of high school or his family to support me and my daughter financially and I don't want to burden them with that bc they aren't as well off when it comes to money as my family is and they can't afford to support us. How do I come to a mutual understanding with my mom? How do I communicate with her and set boundaries that she'll respect? How do I get her to stop hating and being jealous of his entire family without reason? Im so stressed about this I just want to provide my daughter with a loving supportive environment where Im not always walking on eggshells and scared to make choices I think are right for us.
