Frustrated teacher

I live in Florida and I am so sick of all the political statements being made about mandating masks. This will be my 8th year as a high school math teacher and I am pregnant. I love my students and I know that mask up will keep them and everyone around them safe. However, our governor decided to ban mandating masks!!! If the school refuses to follow his orders, he and the board of education will withhold our salaries as teachers! Being a teacher with low pay is already hard enough, but now we have to live in fear of us or our students contracting the virus, or even worst we bring it home to our family (I live with my 82 years old grandma as well).

I agree that students who have underlying illnesses that prevent them from wearing a mask should remain unmask, but otherwise everyone should mask up. You wearing a mask is protecting others from catching whatever virus you have.

How I wish teachers are being treated better because I went into this profession due to my love of teaching. My husband and family have been urging me to quit because we can afford to even without my income. I am thinking I will have to quit because I don't feel protected, but the guilt and sadness of not seeing my students is making me sad.

Sorry for the rant, my emotions/hormones are all over the place today after I found out one of my students has been on a ventilator since Friday because of covid. I feel bad for that students, and one day what if I am on that bed as well with a ventilator along with my unborn baby? Or even worst in a casket... People that share the same opinions as the govenor should think that if all of us teachers quit, who will teach your children? Where will you send them to get an education?
