Scared to start pumping

Baby is 4 weeks old today and I was told by lactation consultant at the hospital to start pumping around now... Since baby was born I have been using a Hakka and catching my milk. I have a pretty good supply so far just from catching.

My breast are already over engorged at times and make my little man throw up sometimes.

I'm scared to start pumping and having my milk come in even more and he continues to Throw up because my breast are so full...

What should I do?

if you only pump some of your milk out and then breast feed him, it won’t increase your supply and could help with his upset stomach. he’ll also be drinking more hindmilk (fatty milk) so it’ll help him put on more weight

I might purchase a hand pump. I don't want to dirty my breast pump just for a few minutes???

Why do they want you to start pumping already?

As long as your baby is getting enough through latch feeding, is having enough wet diapers, and is gaining weight then no. In my experience the extra pumping will cause you to make much more milk. If youre engorged between sessions though, i highly recommend just using a haakka (or two) to just get comfortable. Thats what i did until my milk regulated on its own. If you dont want to though you definitely dont have to!

The lactation consultant told me to start at 4 weeks? But I guess I don't have to right?
