Am I wrong for refusing to pay half of the rent now ? My sister and I live together, we never have problems! When we first moved in we agreed to go half on the rent which has been going great, we both pay in full and on time. She recently moved her boyfriend in with us and i feel like he should also pay rent because he LIVES here too. It’s not right that he gets to live here for free, if I were to move my boyfriend in I would make him pay rent. So In my opinion the rent should be split between 3 people now, since 3 people live here. We also pay for sewer, electric, cable etc. all of which he uses so he should also contribute to those bills too being as though the bills went up because of him. He won’t clean up at all, take the trash out, or even cut the grass ! He also eats the groceries that I pay for but won’t buy more groceries when something runs out. So basically he’s happily living here for free off of my money ! Oh and most importantly HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE A JOB ! I know if I say something it will start a problem, should I say something or just move out when I finally find a place ?

This should have been discussed before he moved in. Bc he is using electric etc. It's making the cost go up for both of you. It would be an issue for me . I wouldn't care that it was my sister

I wouldn’t want to risk my relationship with my sister. You’re right, it should be split 3 ways, and his laziness and mooching is not okay. I’d just tell your sister your looking at other apartments.

I’d say rent should still be in half because they share a room but the other bills should be split 3 ways. I would’ve discussed this prior to him moving in but it’s obviously too late for that. Maybe sit down with your sister and work something out. If you can’t come to an agreement then maybe start looking elsewhere.

I agree all bills should be split 3 ways especially if it was never the plan to move significant others in. Whether or not they share a room he still counts as a person in the house. Any adult that uses that address should be paying bills, that includes rent not just utilities. It’s disgusting that he even feels comfortable living there for free, the cost of living has shot up tremendously. I don’t blame you for not wanting to go half anymore because you’re living in a 3 person (ADULT) household. You and your sister came to an agreement that the 2 of you, not 3 of you, would go half. If you were to move out would she take over all the bills ? NO ! She would then expect him to pay something now that she doesn’t have you to rely on, so why not make him start paying part of the rent now ? So for all the commenters saying “not if he shares a room” do you and your husband spilt bills or he doesn’t count so therefore doesn’t need to help with rent since you guys share a room??

It’s yours and your sisters house and ideally he’s the one who should be kicked out since he’s a freeloader. Talk to you sister about this, have an open communication with her. If she still prioritizes him just find a new place and leave.

if they are sharing a room (which I assume they are) I’d let her figure out if she wants to make him split half her share of rent or not. But he should be paying his share of the rest of the bills and groceries

I’ll keep it simple. 
HELL YES THE THREE SHOULD SPLIT THE RENT. 
or you are going to have to make calculations and charge your sister a higher half of the rent if the boyfriend doesn’t want to pay or if your sister does not agree on him paying. PERIOD!
