Did you hire a Doula? Was it worth it?

FTM here. Trying to have a Doula but not sure how to ask them to make sure I will hire the right one.

I had a doula with my first birth. I felt it was worth having her there as a FTM. She was a great emotional support when  back labor set in, she tag teamed my husband when he needed a break, and she helped remind me to loosen my muscles when I would tense up. Your needs will vary based on where you choose to give birth and what type of birth you want. I would start by finding a doula in your area that matches your birth philosophy. Some questions to consider: ask about her credentials and training, number of births she’s been a part of, her pain management techniques, her experiences advocating for her patients, how she works with OBs and midwives, does she help with postpartum care, does she offer different care packages and what do they entail/cost, length of stay during a birth, emergency scenarios and what her role would be, resources she recommends…

I personally feel I will be supported well enough by my husband and OB but if I wasn’t sure of that I would look into it. If you’re going in a hospital just check the number of people you can have in a room. Mine is currently set at 2 per day so if I had a doula no one else could visit until the 24 hours is up including a photographer or parent

I had to have a doula for my first homebirth and honestly she didn't do a whole lot. My midwives require it for first time birthers at home. She took a couple of pictures and made me some scrambled eggs and toast after the baby was born. My husband is legit the best birthing partner. He's just a very calm presence and doesn't fuss too much. I just like everything quiet and calm so I can just go within when I'm in labor so I don't really need much help.

Loved having my doula. They know your whole birth plan and will advocate for you what your wishes are when you and your partner are busy getting through labor. My husband and doula would also take turns assisting me in labor like getting me snacks, water, or doing counter pressure to help with the contractions. It was amazing having her with us

I had a midwife who acts as a doula. Worth every penny! But do ask lots of questions !
