Question: can a manager legally fire a new employee for calling in EVERY DAY and not showing up to complete the training so she can start the job she was hired to do?

Backstory:

The manager at a dollar general I applied at hired a new girl (we will call her Karen because that's what she is being). Anyway, she was hired and was told to come in to watch the videos so she could get on the floor as a cashier and she has had her boyfriend call in for her 3 TIMES and shes been on the schedule 3 TIMES and has NEVER showed up. Her boyfriend came in and admitted to the workers that the reason she gave the first time was a lie because they wanted to go to Lexington for Comicon and that's the real reason why she didn't come.

The manager wants to fire her because all shes doing is taking a spot when she wants to hire someone else (me) but shes afraid she doesnt have a reason to fire her.

I applied for multiple jobs and I'm waiting but I have asked for 2 weeks about this position and I finally got an answer.

To add: yes I know different places are hiring BUT here the only places hiring will not even hire anyone unless they know them or they are places I've worked before (like the hospital) that wont hire me back because I quit so the solution isn't as simple as "look for another job"

Update:

It turns out the Male manager (who no one likes) was told by the HEAD manager over the store to look for any reason to fire ANYONE their. So the employees are on edge including the hiring manager and they are getting ready for a remodel so she doesnt want to fire the new hire because shes more concerned with that. So I basically wasted 2 weeks of my life which is great. I guess I'm waiting on the other jobs to contact me
