Can Reid be short for Richard?

We want to name our second son Richard after family, but I also love the name Reid. Could I name him Richard but call him Reid? Already have a middle name so can’t use it as a middle. What do you guys think?

I mean they use Dick short for Richard and I’ve never understood that one lol. At least Reid is closer to Richard 🤷🏼‍♀️

My sisters name is Jessica but her nickname is Lulu
My brothers nickname is Pookie.
My nickname is Gator.

I just don’t understand the logic of giving them one name when you’re intending on using another, my parents did the same and it’s a nightmare because I don’t even identify with my ‘official’ name,  just name him Reid.
