Does anyone know what that brown rash is ? It showed up on my boyfriends back out of no where

It looks like it could be Tinea Versicolor (aka pitryasis). I have it right now actually and it occurs on and off - mine came out of nowhere as well. He should see a doctor to confirm, but if it is, the two types of treatment my doctor  prescribes for this include a topical cream and/or a pill. Last year when it should up, I took the pill and it went away immediately. This time, I am nursing my infant and it was recommended to try the topical cream for 2 weeks first.
