Is an induction always scheduled ?

Sorry this is my first pregnancy and I was curious to know. I don’t know if I’m having one yet BUT just wanted to know if an induction is always scheduled or can it happen the same day? For example I’m 40 weeks pregnant today and I’m seeing my doctor on Monday she said she won’t let me go pass Monday, is it possible if I MIGHT get induced that it will be that day ? Or how does it usually work ? I’m aware that every doctor and every pregnancy is different. The scheduling part is my only question if anyone can answer that tyia.

I had one scheduled, but it got moved up unexpectedly when I started having complications in early/prodromal labor.

For mine they've always been scheduled in advance. Only because if there's nothing super urgent about the induction they will just have you on a list. For some reason our hospital always has a wait for the maternity/delivery rooms and beds. If there's no wait it can happen fast though. Also if you go to your appointment that day, she can send you right in and it is usually a little faster that way for whatever reason. Also they normally have you do a pre registration and do all your paperwork for insurance and releases and whatnot beforehand.

I think unless there are medical issues beyond that the baby just isn’t here yet it’s “scheduled” I saw my doctor on friday. They said If baby hasn’t come by Wednesday they wanted to induce Wednesday. My doctor called me on Monday to see how I was doing and said they’d get me on the list at the hospital for Wednesday. The hospital called me Tuesday night and said we have a bed open can you be here in 30 minutes… so I was induced Tuesday night.

I’ve had one unexpected induction and two scheduled inductions. Usually hospitals prefer to schedule the induction so they can make sure they have beds/rooms and are prepared etc. in some cases though (mine was preeclampsia) the scheduling is not always possible so an unexpected induction would be the option.

It can be unscheduled. A friend went in and her blood pressure was too high, they admitted her and induced her stright away.

No. I had an induction at 38+3 unexpectedly.

You don’t have to be induced if there is no reason. I went 11 days past my due date. My doctor said he “wouldn’t” let me go past 7 days and I said “I’ll wait” then he said 2 weeks and if I hadn’t had her, I would have asked him if we were harms way and if that answer was honestly no then I would have waited. Due dates are estimates and inductions are often based on your OBs schedule.
