Playing with newborn??

Question

OK so this may sound stupid but... how do you play with the newborn? I mean okay yeah you can play Patty cake but otherwise what is there to do?
 I feel like tummy time isn't really playing with them because it's more like a learning experience. So I'm really just wondering what can I do with my newborn, she will be a month old on December 1st.

Pediatric therapist here! 😊 You won’t really be able to play patty cake with a newborn! Newborns and young infants “play” much different than an older baby or a toddler. Play for a baby is all about sight, touch, and hearing. Just looking at you, looking at high contrast objects, tummy time, listening to you talk to them, hearing rattles, snuggles, etc. As baby begins to reach and move better, they’ll “play” with their own toes and hands even! Peek a boo won’t be “real” to them until 4 months or so, before that baby is just reacting to your excitement, voice, and eye contact. It’s enough for them I promise! They feed off the love. As baby gets older play will become more of a defined thing, with the common play games you’re thinking of like tickles, toy use, liking to be thrown in the air, etc. starting to show up.

Tummy time and doing peak a boo is playing lol . I would dance with my son hold him in my hand and dance to 70s music or even Disney channel songs lol . I would even get on the ground and have him in front of me and showed him how to roll over from front to back .

I would also sit cross cross apple sauce (lmao yes I still say this ) and talk to him and kiss his little cheeks gave him a rattle and sing random made up songs with him while he was in his bouncer lol  . I enjoyed these times with my son a lot . He’s four now and we are still stuck like glue

Just talking to them and tummy time is good. Also, sing to them.
