Anyone else find it odd that the US focuses on how to respond to active shooters in schools, rather than focusing on how to prevent shooters in school in the first place?

It’s because most Americans care more about their right to bear arms than keeping children safe at school.

There’s a reason for it.. boils down to they don’t give a damn to ban guns or put tougher restrictions in place. We just wait until the next shooting and then it’s the same song and dance.

Well, to be fair, I think there are huge and on-going anti-bullying campaigns all over the nation. Teen suicide has skyrocketed and has become the second cause of death for adolescents. Children are more medicated than ever, broken homes are the norm, and American culture is declining, leaving millions of teens feeling lost, depressed, and purposeless. 
It’s so easy to say it’s the guns. However, that discredits the tens of millions of other people who can see a gun and choose not to murder with it.

Weird. I remember them all. I also remember the year in school of assembly and counseling and activities in effort to prevent it. The anti bullying movement ect. 
Banning guns has not happened. Effort has been made to prevent though. It's not like everyone runs around not caring about it.

No. Not at all surprising how the powers that be prioritize guns and other ways to kill or cause suffering. All while talking out their backend about how FrEeDuMb and being "pro life."

I don't think it is "odd," but I think it is less effective. It is also much easier and less expensive to be reactive instead of proactive.

Odd but also really scary how desensitised some Americans seem to be to this kind of crime. I wouldn't be sitting back and accepting it as an unfortunate incident if kids were killing kids in my country every other week.

There is constant groups lobbying for gun control, legislature people are trying to pass to make it more difficult for people to access guns, and a large push for anti-bullying programs. As a teacher, I’m very glad we are also having plans in place in the event something would happen. I feel like it’s a good thing they are doing these drills. Even if the government said everyone had to give up their firearms (which will never happen), not everyone will, people will still have access, and this isn’t going to be solved this year or even in the next 5 with a ban in place. This is the society we are dealing with. Quite honestly, I think people need to care more about at-risk youth and their parents need to step up to teach them and support them better. It’s not just a gun issue. They can quit slashing school funding in already low income districts and start bolstering nationwide mental health programs.
