Need help communicating

With Christmas coming up and it being our first Christmas together I bought my step daughter a Christmas gift and I added to it since part of it came in broken and had to replace some stuff.

Well her mom is struggling a little financial wise and I didn’t know until after my shopping was done I told my boyfriend everything I got her and he said that my stepdaughter is gonna be happy with her Christmas gift but he’s worried her mom is gonna feel a certain type of way cuz she struggled to get a Christmas gift and he doesn’t want her feeling bad.

I completely understand this but he did not tell me about her situation sooner and on top of that I don’t think it’s fair to make me feel bad as I’m doing this for my stepdaughter not anyone else and I’m just excited to spend our first Christmas together.

He ended the conversation with it was really sweet that I went all out for her and that made him really happy, but that didn’t make me feel better and now I’m just feeling down about it now.
