Can newborns take a bath after umbilical falls off?

My mother says they can’t just yet cause then babies suffer from stomach problems so I i still have  to cover his belly button with Vaseline so water won’t go inside. Just wondering if this is true since his doctor says the baby can take a bath after it falls off

Yes they can have a bath before and after it falls off, but otherwise keep it dry, nothing on it.

Our doctor said they could if it was all dry but my fourth couldn’t because it still oozed a bit for about a week after it fell off.  He said to wait until there was no discharge.  Don’t put any vaseline on it though, just leave it be

I bathed both of mine before the umbilical cord came off, I just covered it with a big bandage
