Contraception during Perimenopause
Hi everyone, hope you’re all well. I’m 49 and haven’t had any perimenopausal symptoms yet. EXCEPT my cycle has been changing over the past year, from an always reliable 28 days to - most recently - no period for 2.5 months from September to January, and now a second period in January after just eight days gap. I’m missing the old reliability! With regard to contraception at this “awkward time”, what do you find best? I’m in a casual enough but ongoing relationship. It’s not one that I want to develop further but our sexual connection is a key part of it. We both are up to date on our STI testing and aren’t seeing other people, so when my cycle was regular, I liked not using condoms. I’d prefer to not have to use them now. I’m thinking the Coil might be the best option, though also wonder if it’s the best thing to introduce something new to my body if I am (I must be, at this stage!) in peri. A couple of friends have suggested that it’s a good thing to do as it’s helpful to “top up” certain hormones at this time too. I’m starting to research it more now, but I’d also love to hear from others about their contraception experiences around peri. Thanks!
