My ex husband and I have a child. It’s been three years that we have been separated and 6 months since the divorce has been finalized. I’m getting married to my fiancé in about a year and a half. He has been my sons father figure he has been there for my son and loves him as his own. Anyway. We have been talking about my fiancé adopt him once We marry. My ex husband is not around. My son has access to communication with him but my son has slowly shown less and less Interest in him.

Back story:

My ex husband was abusive, couldn’t keep a job, spent him money on loads of marijuana and other drugs. He has a DUI and violated his probation and ICE by testing positive 2 weeks before getting off of probation then running away to another state the day I found out I was pregnant. He came back and started on drugs again. He barely provided for us and did not allow me to work (didn’t want me finding someone else).

When my son was 11 months old my ex left him in a car on a hot day. My son was sent to the er and he was arrested being an undocumented immigrant he was deported within a week. He has then fallen into pill drugs and took a turn of the worse. I really don’t know how he’s doing now. But I do know he has talked with my son while sounding completely intoxicated.

Is there a way to get my son to be adopted by the guy who has loved and truly cared for him since day one? And completely get my ex out of my and sons life forever? I’m not trying to be petty I’m trying to look out for the well being of my son

My biggest fear is my ex coming back to the US and having an impact on my son.
