Can I refuse a transvaginal ultrasound ?

My husband and I went for our first obgyn appointment at 7 weeks and they did a transvaginal ultrasound. It was very painful and after left me cramping and with dark spotting for days after. ( I never had any kind of spotting or cramping before that procedure.) that said everything returned back to normal but now I have another appointment the day before I hit 11 weeks and I am concerned they will want to do another vaginal ultrasound again . Can I refuse and ask for a abdominal ultrasound?

Yes you can refuse any medical procedure. I refuse transvaginal ultrasound and cervical exams during pregnancy. There has been no need for either. You always have consent over your doctor touching your body or performing any type of test or procedure.

At 7 weeks, the transvaginal ultrasound is the most accurate. At 11 weeks, an abdominal ultrasound will be fine.

They don't do transvaginal after 10 weeks unless there are cervix issue.
Early ultrasounds are done transvaginal just because abdominal is not good enough to see.
But your question, yes, you can absolutely decline every procedure you don't want or like, you can also not even go to doctor, if you don't like that, noone is forcing you.

The only reason I had a transvaginal after 8 weeks was because I had experienced preterm labor and was stuck in prodromal labor for the remainder of my pregnancy. I had an ultrasound every week until my baby was born and every other one would start with transvaginal, but thats only because they needed to check the length of my cervix and make sure my contractions weren’t shortening it. If I hadn’t had the constant prodromal contractions, they would have all been abdominal.

My cervix was short which they found out during a transvaginal ultrasound and i needed to take meds to try to fix it and keep the baby in. I would definitely ask why they want to cause if its not for that reason then you dont need it.

I wish I had refused, my mom shouted at me for allowing it.. spotting , BV and antibiotics followed, l can’t know for sure it it was related but gut feeling says so:(. Nobody asked me thought I went for my visit and they said get undressed then the thing was inserted without much warning as normal procedure..

I would figure out why they are doing a transvaginal ultrasound. Is there a complication that they can’t see via regular ultrasound. Find out the reason and do some research to see if you feel it is necessary or not.

With my son I had an abdominal at 10 weeks
With this baby I had an internal US at 7 1/2 weeks and almost 12 weeks. They’re more accurate, and in my experience give a better image but yes, you can refuse if you want to. Keep in mind if you are on the larger side it will be that much harder to do an abdominal because baby is still tiny. You shouldn’t have had that much pain from a transvaginal US though.
