Provera

I just finished taking Provera for the last 10 days. How long does it take before you get your period I have heard anywhere from 3 to 10 days. Just wanted to know of I should just wear a pad until then cause it has been 5 months without a period (not pregnant) and I know the period will be intense when I get it. My husband and I planned for January to start trying for a baby. I got off birth control in then after 5 years of taking it. My period has not come naturally since then. My ob recommended Provera. Also do I need to take Provera every month to get a period now or will it come naturally now.
