Does it feel like baby is sticking their bum out right underneath your ribs for a few seconds? It shouldn't be painful but definitely tight. 
Those are braxton hicks contractions and yes it's your body preparing for labour

I would imagine your stretching up there pretty good at that point and a bit of tenderness would be normal.
