Since you have a puppy, just a tip that we have used has been to buy the big xl airline pet kennel carrier from Walmart, and used a foam camper pad from Fred Meyer and old fitted sheets to make our dog a pimp little house. We have always said”kennel up and kennel up for a treat” and given her treats and bits of meat etc while she is in her kennel. It would be smart for your husband and kids to help with the kennel training in this way! That’s been the coolest thing ever because I see so many dog whining and crying and being annoying and our dog LOVES her kennel. We call it her “tiny house” haha and I know it’s her safe place she hides in.

How long ago did you get him? If he's still settling in, it's normal that he might still feel scared and maybe a little shy/anxious, especially around kids. My Great Dane was very shy when we first got him, especially around the kids. Took him at least a week before he stopped wanting to sit in a corner and longer before he felt comfortable enough to actively play with them.
