The Azelaic acid! It will get rid of the layers of skin on top to bring it to the surface. It’s kind of like flaking skin so just keep it in the spots that need it. Use it in the morning and at night. You can apply moisturizer on top of it in the morning as well, but it seems to work best if, at night, you only have that product on to really let it do it’s job. 
I got mine from a dermatologist and it works wonders!

The acne can be caused by the hormones change when we are teenagers, pregnant or late 30’s. It can be also result of oily skin and constipation.
I just had acne when my period was about to start in one day and the second reason was when I was 39, now I am 42 (no acne).
So I recommend yogurt or Metamucil to regulate your bowels. To the skin I recommend at night wash the affected area with oily skin cleanser and apply over the counter, in the morning wash the product out and apply sunlotion for oily skin.
