How to treat darker skin spots?

So the area around my mouth has been a bit darker than the rest of my face for a while now, and I want a way to get rid of it or lighten it at the very least. Can anyone recommend anything?

Hi! So there are a range of products used for brightening or dark spot treatment. I have not used these products. 
I have been told that placing a lemon wedge on the dark area daily will help lighten the skin.
