Period after relationship

So i was with my now ex boyfriend for a year and 5 months, the entire time i had no periods. i asked my doctor 3 months into the relationship that i wasn’t having it, and she said that it may just be a hormonal imbalance due to my birth control. The day after i break up with him i finally started having a period. Does anyone relate or know anything that may have been happening?
