Does he like me or not

I’ve been friends with this guy since 2018. We stayed friends during the first 3 years, we worked together and I had a boyfriend. I never felt he liked me or anything more than a friend. A year ago, he hinted that he was attracted to me. We started talking. He invited me to a party, we had sex. I asked him the following day what this was. He asked to be friends with benefits so I agreed only because I was going through a break up and I didn’t want anything. We’ve been doing this for almost a year now. Now that I’m in a better place and want to date not just have sex, so I told him what I wanted. If he didn’t want to date then let’s stay friends. He didn’t reply to my message so I took it as let’s stay friends. Days later, he messaged me saying he missed seeing me and he wasn’t ready for commitment. I understand, so I told him let’s stay friends however he kept trying to see me. My question is… is he attracted to me only physically? Does he like me but really not ready for commitment because he’s not established like I am? He’s very dry, & does not open up. “I miss you” was the most I’ve gotten out of him. We live an hour away from each other, why does he still want to see me when he can find another friends with benefits who is 10 minutes away from him?!

I did see him eventually after 2 months, but this time we went out to the bar and then went back to his place. It was quite nice. I just don’t get why he doesn’t want to try dating, it seems as if it would work because we get along! To top it off, I don’t even know if I like him dating wise because I don’t know how he really is, only as a friend. I need a male/females perspective!!! Please help!
