What do I do if I can’t get a midwife?

There’s a huge midwife shortage in my country and because I didn’t expect to get pregnant, I hadn’t booked one prior to conceiving (as they’re tending to recommend these days). It seems as though I’m unable to get one who meets my needs. What are my options?

Is this for a home birth? If so, are you able to look into hiring a doula or a labor and delivery nurse? I’d personally trust a labor and delivery nurse almost the same as I would a midwife.

I've decided that unless an absolute emergency I would never birth in a hospital again. My 3rd baby was a unplanned unassisted car birth and it was literally the chillest birth. So I would read all the books, find a great birth support person, and free birth if it were me. Good luck!

I didn’t get a midwife for my second birth, so my pregnancy was managed by a GP with obstetrics training. I also did not want a hospital birth AT ALL, but my GP was great and agreed to come in for us when I went into labour. I truthfully had a better experience than I had with my midwife for my first. I would still never want a hospital birth, but I wasn’t comfortable freebirthing, and this was the next best thing given the circumstances.

There are midwives who work in the hospital setting. Or you could find a midwife attached to a birth center.

what county are you in? if you are in New Zealand you have to have a midwife at birth even a community midwife will do or Cps will be contacted
