1 yr old hates books

Ok so I have a 16 month old son. I want to be able to read him books so badly. But he hates it. I try to read to him he wants off my lap ( even at bedtime). Wants to grab the book from me or chew on it. It makes me feel like a bad mom because everyone talks about reading to their child but when I try too it causes a tantrum. Help??
