What makes someone a good neighbor?

Are you supposed to depend on your neighbors for things or just keep to yourself?
I am having a hard time with this 
How are you with your neighbors?

We mind our own business. Lol we've had to talk to our neighbors for stuff like a fence repair because we share a fence with 4 different neighbors & we obviously need to communicate that. But other than that I don't see a single reason why I need to befriend my neighbors.

We are friendly with most of our neighbors, and have several neighbors that we would consider friends, and they would help us out if we needed something, and vice versa. We also have some neighbors who we’ve only waved to here and there, or have never spoken to. It is worth noting that we live on a cul de sac of single family homes in a suburban area.
