ISO Unprofessional Provider Advice
I’m feeling very upset and I’m not sure how to go about this or what to do regarding my prenatal care. For context, I’m in my third trimester with my third baby. I’m at risk for Preterm Labor, I naturally went into PTL with my oldest at 34 weeks, had him at 38wk. My 2nd I had naturally at 37wk.
I went to bed last night with some discomfort in my lady areas, and didn’t think much of it. I woke up this morning with SEVERE pain down there and swelling, cramping, and REALLY bad itching. I had this with both kids in the 3rd trimester…my oldest where I had associated bleeding as well, with a yeast infection. With my 2nd though, it was BV. I was going to run to get a Monistat at the store but I was worried if maybe it was BV, if that would make it worse, or I wasn’t sure what to do, so I called at 11am to my midwife’s urgent line just to be sure if it was okay or what to do…like not trying to make a huge fuss or anything or waste the money at urgent care, I just really wanted some relief because I am in a lot of pain and discomfort, and the cramps were becoming increasingly more concerning…the woman with the answering service was VERY nice and told me if I didn’t hear anything soon, to give her a call back. So an hour passes not hearing anything and I call back at 12pm and asked if I was supposed to hear something already, again I really am not trying to make a fuss but I just wasn’t quite sure and wasn’t trying to be unreasonable or anything and asked if this was even urgent but I’m really struggling and she said well yes it is…and I said to her how I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. She said to me the “on-call is supposed to call within 40min”, so me calling back was fine. I get a call from the on-call shortly after and when I answer the phone they immediately snip at me how “this is an emergency line”, and “I am too busy delivering babies for this” before I could even get a word in. I said how I was just feeling concerned because I didn’t know what to do and my symptoms were getting increasingly worse but I needed some sort of relief, and I asked if I could just use an OTC miconazole or something or if it would make it worse if I had BV and before I could finish my sentence she cuts me off with this attitude and just says “yep that’s fine, I can’t treat BV over the phone anyways” and that was that. The on-call left a note in my chart about it and stated as if I called simply for “vaginal itching”, mentions none of my other symptoms or concerns. Nothing. I’m just really upset. This is the number they have listed for “urgent matters” after-hours. It felt urgent and very concerning, especially with my symptoms getting worse. Everywhere online says to call your healthcare provider if you have these symptoms that are getting worse, and you are pregnant. Before becoming a SAHM, I was in nursing, so I’m incredibly disappointed and feel like reporting this scenario. I’m not one to do that, but I just wanted some feedback, I guess. That’s why I came here, because idk what to do. It makes me upset to think a first time mom would have to deal with this unprofessional behavior. TIA.
