New obgyn?

Ok so I’m wanting to know, is it normal for an obgyn not to do any blood work for you during your first prenatal visit? I see so many people saying they had blood work or urine tests done at their first appointment and I didn’t, I only had my NIPT test scheduled. Should I possibly find another obgyn? Or is this normal to not get blood work?

Mine waits until the second appointment at 12 weeks to do blood work as long as you’re not high risk or have something else to worry about. I think it’s mainly to get past that first trimester when the risk of miscarriage goes way down. A lot of times there’s not going to be anything you can do if you miscarry in the first trimester, so I see it as a way to prevent me from worrying about every little test. But just my thoughts! I had a miscarriage last fall and no test would have prevented it. So this time around I’m just trying not to overthink things.

I don't get any blood work at my OBs. Just ultra sound to confirm pregnancy at 7 weeks. Because it was so early he wanted me to come back two weeks later.

Maybe things have changed nowadays, but when I had my daughter 10 years ago I don't recall anything other than a urine sample and the ultrasound at the first visit.

I guess things can be different in other countries. I'm from the U.S. and I've always had  a urine sample at my first appointment to confirm pregnancy and then receive an order to get lab work done. I wouldn't say it's *necessary* so if you like your obgyn it isn't something I would switch doctors over.

It varies practice to practice. My OB collects all of the early pregnancy blood work when they collect the NIPS, so they only need to poke you once. They don’t confirm pregnancy, but they do urine for STIs. Blood counts and blood type are usually included in the blood testing.
