Lavender and cats is it safe?

Does anybody know if lavender essential oil in a diffuser is safe around cats? I have a cat and just received a essential oil mist diffuser yesterday to help me sleep. My cat slept in my room all night and was in here the last two hours while it’s been on. I just randomly looked it up because it crossed my mind and I’m seeing mixed info of it being toxic but I seen a article that it’s safe so I’m confused. I don’t want to hurt my fur baby. I kicked him out my room (not literally) and shut my door just to be safe for now. I feel bad because he’s scratching at the door wanting to come in but this along with a sound track combined has been the only thing that helped me sleep in almost two months.
