What makes someone a good person?

Late night topic of conversation. My mom had mentioned she thought (insert public figure here) was a good person. Made me wonder, why does she think that and doesn’t everyone have a different view on what makes someone “good”?

The definition of a "good" person can vary depending on cultural, social, and personal values. However, some common traits associated with being a good person include:

- Respect for others and their opinions

- Open-mindedness and willingness to learn
Whether or not someone considers themselves a good person is subjective and based on their own personal evaluation of their behavior and actions. However, self-reflection and a willingness to improve are important in becoming a better person.
Some things that can help someone become a better person include:
- Practicing empathy and actively listening to others
- Volunteering or giving back to the community
- Being mindful of one's impact on others and the environment
- Continuing education and expanding one's knowledge and perspective
- Engaging in regular self-reflection and evaluation of one's behavior and actions
Ultimately, being a good person is a continuous journey of growth and improvement, and it is up to individuals to define what that means for themselves.

I understand calling someone a good person in casual conversation. It sums up that they have qualities in line with wherever a person’s moral compass points. 
Objectively though, it’s overly simplistic. My values are unlikely to be identical to any other persons values. 
Even within our personal moral philosophies, it’s difficult to single out a specific person as good or bad. Other than a few really unusual examples of those completely devoid of empathy like hitler or serial killers, most people are capable of both good and bad. 
Do I consider myself to be a good person? I try to be, but I’m not a saint or a martyr. I’ve never intentionally hurt someone beyond a touch of snarkiness. I value kindness, empathy, understanding, and lots of other positive traits. However, I’m also certainly capable of pettiness, anger, and bad decision making. I can be downright cantankerous some days. Even my best friend once lovingly told me I’m a real bitch in the mornings before my coffee. 😂

Answer

I think people people tend to believe someone is good based on what they’re told is ‘good’. It’s also divided into good actions.. e.g; Giving to charity, being selfless, caring for others and good personality traits; patience and empathy etc. obviously there’s more examples and you could go deeper but that’s a rough summary. I think I’m a mostly good person but there’s a lot of room for improvement 😂
