How can I stimulate his appetite?
I have a really old dog. Real old. He's having a tough week and he's pretty much stopped eating. I don't think it's that he's at the end of his life - we just moved (stress, change of environment) and I took him to the vet yesterday and they said he's got a bad infection somewhere so he's on antibiotics.
He got a vitamin shot and an antibiotic shot and the vet said he should get his appetite back but he hasn't. He will eat egg whites (I was worried it was pancreatitis so I've stopped with anything that could be fatty) and plain human biscuits. Doesn't want dog biscuits, kibble or even that damn expensive Royal Canin Recovery food I bought him yesterday. Doesn't even want to eat chicken.
We've just moved and I can't find half my kitchenware to mash him some pumpkin so can I buy him some baby food and hopes he eats that? He likes plain yoghurt so I will buy him some of that too, but I really need him to have a proper meal because I'm sure the lack of food with the antibiotics isn't helping how he feels.
He got pancreatitis two years ago and they eventually had to put in a feeding tube because he didn't want to eat and was fighting the forced feeds.
@makayla, he's not more lethargic than usual (he's a 15 year old large dog - the vets are surprised he's still alive). The vet said his heartbeat is really good and other than the infection, his blood smear was good. Bowel movements are regular and fine. He will eat certain things by hand - I got him to eat one and a half chicken nuggets just now. He didn't want the baby food or the yoghurt so I just smeared the spoon over his tongue. Last time he had the pancreatitis it took him two weeks before he had a full meal. 😢
