We split evenly per adult.

Normally per family, but if one family needs more bedrooms than another we split per bedroom

We rented a cabin recently and split the cost by family. We each had 1 bedroom per adult couple and then there was a bunk room and a hide-a-bed that the kids shared.

I would do it based on rooms

Think it depends on family dynamics. We (4 households) there is 2 that usually pay the rental and the other 2 cover food/entertainment. That way we all get to vacation together within our budget.

We usually split per bedroom too. so if we’re renting a $5,000 house with 5 bedrooms it would be $1,000 per bedroom. My husband and I would need 2 bedrooms so we’d pay $2,000. My sister and BIL would pay $1,000 for her room. My other 2 sisters would pay $1,000 ($500 each) for the room they share. And my parents would pay $1,000.
