Do.you wake a newborn to feed?

What is the general rule of thumb for how often a newborn should be fed, and how does this vary based on the baby's age? Should a newborn who is sleeping for an extended period of time be woken to eat?

We fed every 3 hours night and day until she had surpassed her birth weight and was obviously growing well. Then, we did every 3 hours during the day and let her wake us at night when hungry.

At the beginning you should be feeding baby every 3 hours to ensure proper weight gain. Once good weight gain is confirmed you can start stretching out the feeds (I typically stretch the night) to longer intervals but stick with every 3 hours during the day just up the amount you are feeding them to keep up with calories.
