Herpes

I recently met this guy who is really nice and I’ve gone out with on a few dates. This last time we hang out kissing started to go a little farther, but he stopped. He started to look a little nervous and said he didn’t want to go farther without being honest about something. He then goes on to tell me that he got herpes in his last relationship. That’s obviously not something I want to catch also, so I guess my question is, is it okay to have sex with someone who has herpes? I’ve done a little research and it says it’s most spread when the person has an outbreak. He’s a really nice guy and I don’t want to turn him away because of that but I also don’t want to catch it. Any advice?
