Question

Did anyone have their first born with them in the hospital when giving birth to their second baby?

￼Baby will be about a year old when we have baby 2. I think I’d have way too much separation anxiety and guilt if my first wasn’t w me all night and don’t trust family. Has anyone done this before and it wasn’t a bad experience?

Most hospitals won't allow children in the L&D rooms. I had a ton of seperation anxiety leaving my oldest, but it was for the best. Kids have no business being in a L&D room. No one would have been able to focus on my oldest, not that she was even allowed, and I wouldn't have even been able to think about her. Let alone miss her. Had she been in there it would have been a nightmare and she would have witnessed her mom almost die and seen things that would have been very scary for her.

I reccomend your child not be there so you can focus on you and your new baby. Also your support person can also just focus on your needs instead of worrying or entertaining the little one.

A lot of hospitals have rules about children in L&D. Even if you have someone with them in the hospital it’s still a huge liability. I’d definitely discuss with them.

I do homebirth, so a little different, but my oldest was 15 months when my second was born and he was in and out of the room with an assigned caretaker and it was great. Now approaching birth #3 and i have my caretaker in place and will be allowing my now 3 and 2 year old sons to be there for the birth. I am excited for my boys to see the birth of their brother. Trust your provider to tell your caretaker if they need to leave the room with your child.

I had my first in the room with me during labor for my second. My husband, mom and MIL kept him occupied. He was 16.5 months old. My OB even commented how calm everything was and not one person said a word about him being in the room. However he did leave with my husband after I got in my room after recovery. It was the first time ever apart from him. It sucked.

I Highly suggest having someone watch your child. Your child doesn’t need to see you in pain like that and really most hospitals won’t allow it.
