Is it weird that my mom never taught me this basic stuff?

She never taught me how to shave my legs (in 8th grade I was embarrassed to have hairy legs so I just started using my sisters razor in secret), how to use pads/tampons (I had to get supplies from the school nurse or sneak them from my moms bathroom), how to maintain a house (I’m an adult now and just got my own home and realized I have no idea how to clean a house like methods/frequency… previously I lived in a. Studio apartment so it was not a big deal to clean). She never told me anything about sex or intimacy besides don’t ever do it bc it’s very bad (even until after college she said that). Same with masturbation. She never bought me a bra so I ended up stealing one from my friends drawer. I went to school in dirty clothes because my stuff was never washed, granted this was in middle and high school so I guess I should’ve been doing my own laundry? I’m not sure when that starts? I had a school uniform for high school and my outfits were always missing so I wore the wrong shoes and socks. My hair was always greasy and nasty, one time she told me if she rang it out she could have enough oil to put on a bowl of pasta! Those are the main things but I’m sure there are more. I now have a baby of my own and I think it’s obvious that I’d teach them this stuff and at minimum make sure they’re doing laundry regularly and have clean, matching clothes for the mornings. And if they’re too busy with homework and sports, I’d do their laundry for them. Are these things you learned from your mom? Is this just normal stuff?

Your mother was a terrible mother. She should have taught you all of those things and more. My mother had her faults, but one thing she did for me that I will always be greatful for was teaching me about life. She got me my first razor (electric) and taught me to shave. She taught me EVERYTHING about hygiene and made sure I was ALWAYS clean. She did my hair every day and spent many hours teaching me to do it myself. I never truely had to have the talk because I had a bunch of little talks growing up that led to me understanding. I knew what sex was, all about preventing pregnancy, safe sex, how my body worked and how cycles worked, ect. I was the person all of my friends turned to because they knew I was informed. I even supplied period products until my friends could tell their own mothers because they were scared to talk to their moms. 
When I got my first period I didn't know it was my preiod because the blood was brown at first. I brought my panties to my mom and asked her what was going on. She taught me how to remove the blood, helped me put a pad on, and taught me all about hygiene while menstrating. Even let me choose my own products to find out what I did and didn't like. 
She taught me about makeup and helped me to find the right shades, how to apply, and gave me the freedom to learn. I'm a very feminine woman and I learned it all from my mom. Even manners, proper etiquette, phone etiquette, how to act in certian places, appropriate clothing for every event type, ect. I started doing chores and learned the proper way for everything. How to clean, the best products for specific things, decluttering, organization, absolutely everything. 
My own daughters are 3 and 23 months and they both do chores already. They know they brush their teeth twice a day, bathe every day, wash their hands before meals, how to load the dryer, put clothes in the hamper, sweep, mop, put things away, help wipe counters and appiances, ect. Anything they want to try they can. 
My ex step-sister had a mother like yours. She was told a cycle was when you pee blood. I had to give her the talk, teach her about her body, explain cycles, help her learn how to take care of her menstral hygiene, ect. She's a mother now, a teenage mother to 3 and a horrible one at that, and she can't function. She rarely bathes, no hygiene, looks like a drowned rat, doesn't clean, doesn't cook, ect. She's married and still can't do anything that a normal functioning human can do. It's a good thing that you're breaking the cycle and setting your child up for good habits.

She should've taught you how to take care of yourself in whatever way you needed. She should've taught you how to care for ￼your surroundings. ￼
In my house, basic hygiene is taught and is a must￼. Things like shaving will be taught if/when she wants to be taught that. It's something she gets to decide. I will never tell her what to do with her own body hair. ￼She already knows how to use pads and when it's time for her to learn, I'll show her how to use tampons as well. ￼Now I will tell you that although my daughter knows how to take a shower and wash her hair, there are times when she admits to not washing her hair for several days in a row and it gets greasy. Now that's not my problem because I'm not in the shower with her washing her hair. I will remind her to wash it if I see it getting like that.￼ It's your body, you know how to take care of it, so don't rely on me because I won't always be here. I can teach you how to care for yourself, but caring for yourself is a must once you've learned. ￼My daughter knows how to do laundry because we go to the laundromat every week. This is all just part of raising an independent person. ￼

My mom taught me how to take care of myself, my pets, and my home. I knew how to cook and clean, get myself to school ect. By the time I was in 5th grade I was doing both our laundry. My mom was always open about sex, period stuff ect. I have 4 kids 2 girls and 2 boys. They started doing their own laundry around 5th grade. They know how to take care of themselves and are always presentable and well maintained. Since we had our 4th baby 10 years after the 3rd they are excellent care givers to their very demanding brother.

I learned most that from my mom except shaving, sex, period stuff. I just took pads from the stocked storeroom when I needed. I don’t think my mom even knew I had gotten my period for several months. My dad gave me the sex talk. I was left to my own devices when it came to beauty and grooming. Of course cleaning, laundry, all that shit I was doing before my 5th birthday. Classic Mormon, female, oldest child, mini-mommy upbringing. Equally grateful and resentful
