When should I expect to hear from my boyfriend

My boyfriend and I have honestly only been together a little over a month. I have been in two abusive relationships prior. I'm trying at love again. My mom has told me a real man will chase you. The man I'm dating has 2 kids so I do understand his kids will be his top priority. He has also said he doesn't "chase" anyone. If he meets someone and they're both feeling it then they can both move forward equally. He doesn't chase which I get it. He has two kids that are 12 and 13 so I understand. I don't usually hear from him until about 10am on weekends and a bit later on weekdays. Which I understand. He works Monday-Friday and in the morning he's getting his kids to school and then going to work. He messages me around his lunch break. Weekends he messages me around 10 because he sleeps in a little then wakes up and makes breakfast for his kids. I just want to ask is this normal or not putting in effort? If you have kids when do you message your partners?

@Lisa one of the kids(Can't remember which) is autistic. He has to drive them to school. They have to be to school by 8:30 and he has to be at work by 9. Also yes I know for a fact he is single.
