sleep train?

my son is going to be 12m in feb, we're finishing up his room so we can move him into there rather than with me, but his sleep is a little off, it's not that he doesn't sleep the night, cause he can, but not all the time.

For the last month or 2 every night when i do put him in his cot after a feed that's made him sleep, an hour or two later he will wake up screaming and stand up in his cot and will continue screaming untill he's picked up, then once he's picked up and put into my bed he settles more or less instantly. some nights he isn't asleep and i've got to have him in my bed to make him even go to sleep.

I don't know how to go about sleep training him since he doesn't fall asleep at night by himself, during nap time he will fall asleep on me but not for night time.

I've tried to sleep train method where you go in every 5,10,15,20 etc minutes and i sat outside the door while waiting to go in and it was heart breaking but i was committed untill at the 15 or 20 minute wait, i could hear him struggling to catch his breath after crying so much so i gave in.

Anybody have any tips on how i go about this? it'll be difficult at the start i know but it's gone on for a while now and id like him to have his own room and own space as well as get my own bed back 😅
