Never know. It may be an underlying  problem that has yet to be acknowledged (from either person) and it's festering and other irritants become  greater than what they really are.

Man and Woman may love each other and be viewed as a great mate but may not be meant to be mates for each other. Just because some one is a great person doesn't mean that they are a great person FOR you or you for them.

At the end of it all, if it's worth fighting for, Fight. 
I would say  if it's not really beneficial for man or woman or child(ren) involved, it may have to be let go. Stress is unhealthy. If children are involved, what they see mommy and daddy do very well could mold their future outlook on relationships and what is called "normal" because it's how mommy and daddy "loved" each other.

Speaking from being in a similar situation, my hub and and I began to have what we call "Dead-ass Moments".
 It's where we have an issue, new or old, that we need to get out. It starts with that phrase.....letting the other know I have some real shit I need to get off of my chest and my intent is not to hurt or upset you, it's not to argue, it's me simply saying this is my problem with you or what you are doing or not doing,or simply what's going on in life with us. 
We have been working on Explaining our feelings and emotions INSTEAD of Expressing them. and we never go to bed mad. May not be completely  happy but all matters are resolved before we go to bed for the night and we never sleep separate (in different rooms) At the end of the day it is known by both of us that no matter what....I have your back and I love you.
Idk if you are religious  or spiritual  but the Bible says a soft answer turns away wrath.

I'll pray all goes well and in the favor of all people involved and even more so the way it is desired.

I know it's kinda long but I hope it helped to at least inspire some thoughts.

Work on it, get into counseling together. Don't just give up if you two love each other. I'm in the same boat as you. You can't just give up if you truly love each other. Try first and if it fails, then go.

Very loaded question but if there's love there's always a way. Work it out. My husband and I have been through hell and high water but we work through everything.
