I feel it’s because both of those names are nick names for longer names, Esme for Esmeralda and Nell for Nellie.  I prefer Esme out of both.

I don't know where he's getting Nellie the elephant from as that is very specific. She likely would be nicknamed Nellie at least while she is a child. Though Nelli Gnu from Llama Llama is more likely than elephant. Nicknames happen. Most get an e sound at the end because it sounds cute. My name is Rose. I was called Rose E (middle initial) growing up but went strictly by Rose before age 10. I have a Katherine who goes by Kathy right now and a Saphira (sa-fear-ah) that we call Saphy (saffy). I also have an Evelyn that we call ducky.

Keep looking for a name that you both like. When we had our second, my husband had a name pop into his mind and I really wasn’t sure about it, but I decided to try it out. It took about two weeks and now I think it’s the sweetest name.

I teach an Esme (that’s her full name) and her nickname is Ezzie. She is literally the sweetest thing, so kind hearted and happy to help/ always checking on her friends. I think it’s down to the both of you, maybe one of the names could be a middle name? I really like both names, I just wanted to give you some good connotations for the name Esme in case that’s the road you go down. 💜
