How to pump and feed?

How and when do you pump after feeding baby? I’m wanting to do both but I’m not sure how to get started or when is the best time to pump when also breastfeeding

How frequently does baby feed? I like to pump 1/3 of the way between feeds, e.g. if baby eats every 3 hrs, then i would pump 1 hr after feeding baby. However, ive found that pumping on one side while breastfeeding baby on the other works extremely well too and then you dont need to find time for a separate pumping session.

You shouldn’t need to nurse and pump the first few weeks. Baby to breast is the best way to establish and build your supply and pumping on top of nursing can lead to a painful oversupply and potentially other problems, clogged ducts and mastitis. When baby is settled and your supply is normalized around 6 weeks, you can add pumping once a day. You also don’t need to go crazy pumping here, just enough for a bottle, which will be about 4oz. Breastfed babies shouldn’t ever need more than 4oz in a bottle as your body adapts your milk to babies caloric needs.
If you’re returning to work I would pump about 2 weeks before just once a day for a small “stash” and then when you’re at work you will just pump when baby would eat and then baby gets those bottles the following day. On Friday those get saved for Monday. I nurse baby when I’m home on the weekends.

Pumping both at once helped me, and I agree with the hour recommendation after nursing. 
Personally, I found it easier to nurse my a baby every time he was hungry and work on stocking my fridge & freezer supply. That way, everything they eat comes from you and anything you pump you can keep.
That being said, don’t stress, an ounce at a time is fine, more WILL come just keep latching that baby.
It’s so much work! But worth it if it’s what you want! Good luck

No pumping on top of nursing for the first 6wks. Doing so can create a serious over supply that causes issues. Quite honestly this is truth here. It is MUCH easier to just nurse baby. Pumping creates chaos and overwhelming emotions. It’s very time consuming also. You also have to make sure you pace feed to ensure good transition between breasts and bottle and prevent over feeding. 
You can get a haaka to catch your let down and then have some supply for any bottles. BUT you will HAVE to pump any missed nursing session. If you don’t supply will go down. 
Nursing baby at breast is just so much easier.

I use the haaka on one side while baby eats on the other and I get between 1-2 oz each time. I do this because my baby highly prefers one side and usually won’t latch on the other. I do this with almost every feed (many times a day, my baby is only a week old) so I have a lot of milk already stored in the fridge/freezer without much effort.
