What age did you get your child their first phone?

Mine aren't that old yet, but a lot get it around 9-10 years here.

My son is 7. He won’t have a phone until he’s in high school. It’s not necessary before that.

My oldest got one in fourth grade because my kids walked home to an empty house after school and we don’t have a landline. When my oldest went to middle school last year, my youngest got a phone for the same reason. We use a smart family plan and so our children have restrictions/limits on their phones, for safety reasons and mental health reasons.

Mine are not old enough to have to worry about this just yet. My brother and I got our first phones in middle school. Mainly because of sports and we walked to and from school at random odd hours for practice and after competitions and events. Our parents worked insane hours so it was just an added layer of safety. This was back in the days when texting was free for a certain amount and then each text cost so much after that. Easily rack up a $300 bill just texting if you weren't careful. Internet always cost money and wifi wasn't a thing. So internet use was prohibited flat out. Mobile to mobile was free for calling and then free calling after 8 🤣 it was way easier to have restrictions because everything was charged. The only game available was snake. You couldn't even record a song to make it a ringtone. Only had like 10 polyphonic options preloaded on the phone. Color display wasn't a thing. Cameras on phones weren't a thing. Way easier and safer than the phones now days that do everything.
