Doula? Or no doula?

Question

Should I have doula when I go to give birth? How useful are they really? 
I’ll take good experiences and bad ones.

I’ve trained as a birth doula and work as a postpartum doula. I believe strongly in the benefit of having a doula. With most birthing staff, they are in and out but a doula’s job is to be by your side the entire time. She helps both the mother and the birthing partner. And I’ll add on top of these benefits, a more positive marital relationship following birth

I had a doula for both of my births and I loved her! She was super helpful. While your partner may be very helpful in terms of emotional support, a doula is a professional birth assistant and knows so much about the process, they can anticipate your needs and can do things for you that you wouldn’t even necessarily think to ask for. And if you want to have a low intervention birth, they are fantastic advocates and will be able to help you communicate your wishes to the rest of your birth team.

I had to have a scheduled c-section because my son was breach, but I’ve had several friends who used doulas and couldn’t have had a more positive experience. They helped advocate for what they wanted and took the stress off the significant other so they could just be supportive. I kind of look at them as a birthing coordinator. They make sure the mood and room is how you want it. They play the music you picked out and help you change positions and help suggest things for you.
