My period is 5 days late. I took a first response this morning and it was negative. Could my period just be late?

You generally get your period 14 days after ovulation. If ovulation gets pushed back for any reason (change in diet, exercise, stress, illness, etc) then your period will get pushed back as well.

It’s late due to late ovulation. If you have regular unprotected sex then it’s still possible to have a test turn positive
