Is it safe to get dental X-rays during pregnancy?

Hey mamas! I have a dental appointment coming up and I'm wondering if it's safe to get X-rays while pregnant. Has anyone had any experience with this? I'd love to hear your thoughts and advice!

Sometimes I wonder if we expect too much of ourselves to know everything in pregnancy - your dentist will know if you can have an X-ray and will help you assess the risk vs urgency of having one now or after baby is born. You don’t need to do research for them mama, get the dentist to do their job because they went to college to learn this stuff

My sister is a hygienist and when I had my last dental appointment with her months ago she told me they needed bite wing X-rays for my file since they hadn’t gotten them in awhile so she reassured me that it’s safe. She said if you have eaten a banana while pregnant, the same amount of radiation in a banana is about how much you’re exposed to during those bite wing style X-rays. She was third trimester pregnant and has worked at her office for years during both her pregnancies doing X-rays and things on patients and her kids have been fine too. So it’s probably safe but if you’re worried you can ask them to defer the X-rays until your next appointment.

Generally dental xrays are considered safe due to location as they cover your bump up however xrays in general are not and so my dentist said theyd only ever do them if desperately required and rather err on the side of caution x

I’ve gone to dentist is all my pregnancies. Normally they skip X-rays but this last time I asked if I could get one to look at a tooth that was bothering me. They took one X-ray of that specific area and assured me its safe.

I had a dentist appointment around 20 weeks and we just skipped the X-ray part since they didn’t need to do it. They just did the normal cleaning and I just deferred the X-ray to my next appointment (after baby is born). My doctor said the most sensitive time is during the first trimester, but why add even a small amount of risk if you don’t need to (while still getting the cleaning done of course, which is definitely recommended).

I don’t get X-rays while pregnant. They can do what they need to do without them and then they can take X-rays after delivery. I’ve had a full extraction without letting them do x-rays. Radiation accumulates in the body tissues over time. So I guess it just depends on your comfort level and how many X-rays you’ve had throughout your life.

I’m an X-ray technologist and the amount of radiation used to in dental is so minuscule that It makes me laugh when they put the whole lead apron on. You’ve honestly been exposed to more from the environment in this pregnancy but it’s all cumulative. I personally would not worry, visits to the dentist are recommended.
