Beautiful way to start the school year

They started school pretty early this year. I'm nurse at a high school and at like 11 a 9th grader was sent here for throwing up. He ran straight to the bathroom and was throwing up and clearly having severe diarrhea. I called his house and told his mother what was going on and she was super calm and said he's fine. I said he's clearly not. He's throwing up and having severe diarrhea. This mother says "He's just going through withdrawal." I paused and said "What?!" She tells me that her son has a heroine addiction and this his a second time getting clean and he's on day one of withdrawal and the first few are always the hardest. I paused again then said "You send your 15 year old son to school while he's having severe withdrawal symptoms and also on day one of withdrawal." She tried to tell me "Well he's done this before. It's not new to him. There's no point of him being home when he can go to school." I told her she needs to come get her child and not bring him back until he's not having severe withdrawal symptoms. She tried to say she knows her son better than me. This is his second time getting clean and he's fine. I said again to come get him. She says "Well you're the nurse. Why can't he just stay with you if you care so much." I said I am not watching a child while he's going through withdrawal. He will need a lot of attention and I have a job to do. He shouldn't be at school going through withdrawal. She argued with me forever until she said whatever and picked him up. After that I made a phone call and before anyone tells me to mind my business, I'm a mandated reporter and can lose my job if I don't report possible abuse or neglect and sending a child to school with severe withdrawal symptoms and arguing about picking him up can be considered neglect. I'm not losing my job over a mother who clearly cares so little about her kids health. It's up to CPS to decide if it's worth their time. But this is a great start to the school year 🙄
